Abstract
This opinion piece analyzes the consequences of the multifaceted effect of technology
interventions on the working conditions in academic libraries with the focus on staff
development. The transformation of working conditions, both positive and challenging, is
not a new phenomena in academic libraries, to which the sphere of digital technology,
automation, and the influence of AI and the services based on it come. This essay is a
critical analysis of how these technologies improvements affect key employment factors
which include, the wage of employees, training of employees, potentials to advance, job
security, annual leave policy, and disciplinary measures. Technology in the work
environment of academic libraries has boosted service delivery as well as speeding up the
processes. However, it has raised support policy concerns in unequal access to training,
redundancy of roles and obsolensce. Besides emphasizing the role of a strategic plan that
establishes a balance between technological enhancement and equitable staff development
practices, the article has identified the kinds of technology intervention tools and some of
the challenges encountered during the progression of technology into the business
environment of academic libraries. Some of the recommendations include investing in
continued training, creating open channels of promotion, ensuring there are fair
performance appraisals, and maintaining job security. Technology can enhance rather than
aggravate the work-life balance of academic library staff and enable academic libraries to
consider a human-centred approach.
